Students gain valuable practical experience at Rocking The Daisies and Earthdance

17 Oct 2018

Practical experience is an important part of developing employable students at SAE.

Recently we arranged for several of our students from both the Sound and Film faculties to work at two leading music festivals in Cape Town in September and October.

Rocking The Daisies

Four of our third-year Bachelor of Arts in Sound Production students were sent to Rocking the Daisies to assist with the setup and running of one of the Cape Town's largest music festivals.

They helped build staging and assisted with rigging, set up lighting, sound systems and LED displays.

It was a very hot week spent lugging sound and lighting equipment around the various stages, but they also were involved with stage management and running segments of the shows during the weekend-long event.

Rocking the Daisies Festival Setup

Rocking the Daisies is a multi-stage, multi-genre festival, so students were exposed to a wide variety of music genres, both electronic and live sound and got to experience first-hand both the thrill and pressure of managing AV at such big events.

Earthdance Cape Town

Four Film Students and four Sound students worked at Earthdance as part of their Work Integrated Learning programme this year.

Head sound lecturer Alec Mackay also joined in and assisted over the weekend.

Working long hours for a very busy festival the students learnt hands-on skills, were challenged and engaged with the real-world work experience of running an event.

Festival Organiser, Dani Boden had this to say: “We were incredibly impressed with their knowledge, tenacity and work ethic.”

The students had this to say:

Dylan (Sound)

"My experience at Earthdance 2018 was magical to say the least. Working with such passionate, dedicated people made every second one to remember!"

Seth (Film)

“The experience of shooting Earthdance opened my eyes to how much production goes into a music festival - mainly because my team and I were looking at it through the perspective of a camera.

“What I've learnt from this experience is that if you are going into a space that the public is partying in, discipline is key, and planning is crucial.”

Keenan - Film

“Earthdance felt like a fantasy throughout shooting the event with my friends. The community around Earthdance was amazing with everyone sharing and spreading love. I would hundred percent go back next year whether I am filming or not.”

Thando - Film

“The experience of being at Earthdance was breath-taking; I forgot that I had to shoot footage. I can't believe I got to be part of such an amazing atmosphere, I'd most definitely do that weekend every weekend.”
